A New Way of Living, Among the Treetops of Denmark

When the Miller family decided to leave suburban Perth for the tree-lined surrounds of Denmark, they were choosing more than a new address. They were choosing a new way of life. Their brief to us was simple: create a home that belonged to its landscape and connected with nature at every opportunity.

Designed Around the Forest

The result is a home that draws the surrounding forest into daily life. Raking ceilings rise through the heart of the home, reaching up and out towards the treetop canopy. Full-height glazing, framed by clerestory highlight windows, floods the living spaces with natural light and offers uninterrupted views of the forest beyond. We positioned every window with care, framing the landscape like a living picture.

A Space for Gathering and Retreat

At the centre of the home’s open living area stands a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. It is more than a feature. It defines the space, marking the transition between the open entertaining zone and a quieter living retreat, while maintaining a clear visual connection between them.

Thoughtful by Design

Even the arrival experience departs from convention. We positioned the entry towards what would traditionally be the rear of the home, leaving the true front open to the forest outlook. From here, we shaped every part of the floor plan around the way the Millers live. The minor bedroom accommodation has its own bathroom, giving visiting family the relaxed feel of a holiday retreat whenever they come to stay.

The master suite occupies this privileged position, with uninterrupted views across the trees beneath raking ceilings and expansive glazing. It is a quiet retreat, immersed in its natural surroundings.

Life Among the Treetops

The home’s outdoor entertaining area sits beneath soaring ceilings, with a central roof that appears to float above two adjoining wings. Sitting here feels like being among the treetops themselves, a space that captures the lifestyle this home was built to deliver.

A Home That Belongs to Its Site

This is what considered design can achieve when it responds fully to its site. For the Millers, home is no longer separate from the landscape around Denmark. It has become part of it.
