Kitchen cabinet trends of 2017

Styles

The traditional, stained wood style cabinets are a slowing down and we are currently seeing more modern sleek looks in the kitchen, as well as people opting for the much loved ‘farmhouse’ look.

Industrial inspired designs are style that is on the rise for this year. You may recognise this style through its use of elements such as exposed brick, exposed pipes and rustic metals. This popular look combines the materials of wood, stone and concrete and then creates interesting finishes in the kitchen. This style of cabinet resonance’s our appetite to rein things back to what’s really important: form, function and aesthetics.

Hardware

Seeing more of modern look in cabinetry, hardware with simple, streamlined angles are a popular trend. While silver is still a very popular choice for metal, we are seeing some gold hardware being utilised in kitchen cabinetry.

Since the comeback of the Mid-century Modern look we are seeing more metal cabinets as a choice in the kitchen. Including a wide range of steel varieties, this cabinet choice is easy to maintain and clean.

Colour

For a long time now white cabinets have always been the choice of many people designing their new kitchen. However, times are changing and we are seeing people get excited about colour in the kitchen and choosing white upper cabinets with lower ones a different colour.

We expect there to be a rise in the selection of grey, black and white tones in cabinets. Black and white have always been popular finishes, but shades of grey is also now in demand and a hot neutral for 2017. These colour choices are easily workable to varying degrees in the kitchen. Using a lighter shade of grey brightens a space, whilst a darker shade creates a warmth and dramatic effect.

Kitchen islands

Slightly off topic but still relevant, choosing white cabinets with an island of a different colour is an interesting trend on the go that we believe adds character and uniqueness in your kitchen.

Handleless cabinets

Say goodbye to handles! Proving very popular in today’s modern kitchen are plain and handleless cabinets, predominantly in gloss finishes and in grey or neutral earthy hues. This will continue to grow as the desire for a look that is both sleek and flexible continues.

Ditching upper kitchen cabinets

It might be time to ditch the upper cabinets! There are plenty of trendy alternatives to upper kitchen cabinets out there as many are now opting for easy-to-reach open shelves and bench-to-ceiling splashbacks. But what’s the benefit? Scrapping the upper cabinets reduces bulk in your kitchen and creates the illusion the space is bigger (good for smaller kitchens).
