Design tips: Your dream bathroom

Bathrooms are often thought to be more of a functional room rather than a designed one. With so many design elements and trending finishes to play with it can be difficult to find your style. Here are some design tips to consider when it comes to designing your dream bathroom.

Bathroom finishings

Depending on the size of your bathroom, if its on the smaller size a floor-to-ceiling glass-enclosed shower can make even the smallest bathrooms feel open and spacious creating a sense of wide open spaces. Clear shower screens (as opposed to cloudy) give the impression of extra space. Trending designs currently consist of fully frameless shower screen that eliminate visual barriers and work exceptionally well in smaller bathrooms.

Just because the bathroom’s function is to be practical, it doesn’t mean you should neglect decorating this room. Consider adding open, unique shelving or spaces in your bathroom for both style and purpose.

Tile style

Choosing the right tile for your bathroom can turn this basic functional space to a relaxing oasis in your home. Tiles a great way to introduce interest through texture, pattern, matt or gloss finishes to the space. Everyday tiles are a thing of the past. Consider selecting interestingly shaped tiles or a splash of colour for you bathroom. Perhaps move away from boring squares and rectangles – try feature floor tiles in curved, round, geometric and diamond shapes.

To create a sense of space use larger floor tiles, you’ll need fewer tiles to cover your space, which means less grouting and lines breaking things up visually. If space is what you are going for then try avoiding large floor covering vanities and extras in your bathroom so you can maximise the floor that can be seen.

Colour

When it comes to choosing a colour if you have a smaller bathroom you might end up crowding it out if you use too many bright colours or too much of a dark colour. Dark colours tend to draw a room in, while light colours do the opposite. But a little bit of contrast is important for creating layers and depth in a room.

If you plan on having the sink/mirror area is in the centre of the room you might want to consider making this your focus point and using colour around it to do so. Features decorated with colour and the surrounding space kept plain is very appealing to the eye. Plan on having a beautiful freestanding bath? Why not highlight this extravagant feature of your bathroom with coloured bath mats/ towels.

Light

Whether you have an airy en-suite or a washroom at the back of the house you can still use lighting features to enhance your bathroom design. With lighting it’s worth thinking practically. Strip or spot lighting above a mirror creates great reach especially in a space that has very little natural light.

Lighting up a shower/bath is less important so choose something subtler. Soft, mood lighting set into the ceiling can create a sense of relaxation especially if you have gone for a richer colour scheme in your bathroom. Lets not forget feature lighting though, whether it be a pendant or wall-mounted fittings. Correct lighting ensures we experience the most relaxed of feelings when using this space. If you do have natural light in this room, put it to good use and avoid blocking windows with heavy blinds.

Still confused about what you want in your new bathroom? Think about what you don’t like in your current bathroom, what you would change and then go from there. Make a list of all the things you’d like to have and then stick to it when it comes to designing your bathroom. At the end of the day your bathroom is yours and no one can tell you how you want it better than you can.
